Community Funding

Funding linked to renewable energy has brought real opportunities to the area, but it can feel confusing because there isn’t just one fund. There are actually four different pots of money that people in Crawford and Elvanfoot may hear about, and each one works a little differently.

The first is the Renewable Energy Fund (REF), which is managed by South Lanarkshire Council and is mainly for larger one-off projects that improve local buildings, facilities or community assets. In Crawford, this has included CEDAR, which received money to cover village hall running costs, and new boards for Crawford Carpet Bowling Club.

The second is the REF Micro-Grant Fund. This is a smaller and simpler fund for individuals and local groups who may only need a modest amount of support. Grants of up to £500 are available and can help with things like small pieces of equipment, local activities or start-up costs. CEDAR administers this fund directly, so anyone interested can speak to a trustee or check the CEDAR website for more information.

The third pot is the SSE Clyde Wind Farm Fund, which is separate from the REF and has supported a wide range of projects in Crawford and Elvanfoot. Examples include a defibrillator for Crawford and Elvanfoot, the Community Action Plan, support for Crawford and Elvanfoot SWI, and the stained glass window project at Crawford Primary.

The fourth pot is the Clyde Extension ring-fenced fund for Crawford and Elvanfoot. This is really important because it is money set aside specifically for the Crawford and Elvanfoot area. Recent funding from this pot has included support for a Community Action Officer role. What makes this fund different is that it should be guided by what the community wants. That is why the current Community Consultation matters so much.

The Community Consultation is simply three questions that need to be answered. It is available online and can be accessed here. A copy has also been delivered to everyone as part of the March Community Newsletter. This money can only be accessed and spent where there is clear local backing and consent.

The main point is simple: there is funding available, and it can support everything from small local ideas to bigger projects that make a lasting difference. If the latest Community Consultation has not yet been completed, what are you waiting for!? Fill it out, pass it around. The more people who take part, the clearer the message about what matters most to Crawford and Elvanfoot.
